Chapel of Our Lady of Conception

This is not just another chapel since its construction is the most prominent contribution out of all those made in the second half of the 17th century. Its creation is the responsibility of the Franciscan Bishop Fray Alonso Salizanes, who focused his efforts on creating this mausoleum as a surprising and luxurious space. This effect is enhanced by the red marble of Cabra, whose use extends from the semi-circular façade to the interior of the space. There are various elements of this chapel to attract the visitor's attention such as its radial cupola and the praying figures of Bishop Salizanes and Saint Ildefonsus, found in side alcoves. However, the altarpiece by Melchor de Aguirre is the most outstanding work. This contains the sculptures of the Immaculate Conception, Saint Joseph and Saint Ana, extremely high quality carvings by Pedro de Mena.

The space is preceded by the ante-chapel, which has a hemispherical dome decorated with mural paintings attributed to Juan de Alfaro. This iconographic series is presided over by the dove of the Holy Spirit, around which appear the figures of small angels holding Marian symbols. The pictorial decoration extends to the Evangelists of the pendentives and reaches the walls, where the representations of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony of Padua are found.
